There is a specific energy in Athens during March—a mix of blooming almond trees, historic pride, and the first café tables moving back outdoors. Staying at 507 Athens puts you at the intersection of this seasonal shift. From our doorstep on the edge of vibrant Koukaki, you are minutes away from national celebrations, world-class exhibitions, and the true 'local' flavor of the Greek spring.

The Double Celebration: March 25th

In 2026, the National Holiday falls on a Wednesday, making it a perfect "midweek bridge" for a five-day city break. This date is unique because it celebrates two "births" simultaneously.

The Spiritual Meaning (Evangelismos): Long before the revolution, March 25th was the Feast of the Annunciation. In the Orthodox faith, this commemorates the Archangel Gabriel announcing the "Good News" to Mary. For Greeks, the date was chosen specifically to link the religious "Good News" with the news of the nation’s rebirth.

The 1821 Revolution: This year marks another anniversary of the struggle that ended 400 years of Ottoman rule. The revolution's cry—"Eleftheria i Thanatos" (Freedom or Death)—echoes through the state’s history. It was a fight for identity that birthed the modern Greek state we see today.

The Iconic Evzones: At the grand military parade in Syntagma (a 5-minute metro ride from us), you’ll see the Evzones (the Presidential Guard). Their uniform is a living history book: the fustanella skirt has 400 pleats—one for every year of the occupation—while their heavy shoes (tsarouchia) feature black tassels that historically hid blades for combat.

Free Culture: To honor the day, the Acropolis Museum in Koukaki (just a 15-minute walk from us) historically offers free entry. It is the ultimate time to see the Parthenon Marbles without the peak-season crowds.

The Culinary Tradition: Bakaliaros & Skordalia

On March 25th, the signature dish of the day is Bakaliaros (Salted Cod). While the holiday falls during the 40-day fasting period of Great Lent, the religious significance of Evangelismos creates a special "dispensation" in the Orthodox calendar.

The Exemption: Because the Annunciation is a joyful feast, the strict Lenten rules are briefly lifted, allowing for the consumption of fish, oil, and wine.

A Historical Choice: Salted cod became the national tradition because it was accessible to everyone. Centuries ago, those living in mountainous regions far from the sea could not get fresh fish; salted cod was the only affordable option that could be easily transported and preserved without refrigeration.

The Perfect Pairing: To balance the mild, crispy-fried fish, it is traditionally served with Skordalia, a robust and thick garlic purée.

A Global Art Event: Yorgos Lanthimos at Onassis Stegi

Starting March 7, 2026, the Academy Award-winning director Yorgos Lanthimos presents his first-ever photography exhibition in Greece at the Onassis Stegi.

The Event: Known for his unique cinematic vision (Poor Things, The Favourite), Lanthimos offers a rare look at his still photography. This exhibition is one of the most anticipated cultural events of the year, drawing an international audience to Athens.

The Venue: The Onassis Stegi is a hub for contemporary culture and global art. It is located just 1km from our facility, making it a convenient walk or a 2-minute taxi ride from your apartment.

Why Visit: Whether you are ending a day of business meetings or exploring the city’s modern side, this exhibition provides a world-class experience within minutes of your home base.
