There's a version of Athens that tourists don't always find — quieter streets, neighbourhood cafés where locals actually sit, a pace that doesn't feel rushed. That's Koukaki. And if you're working remotely and looking for a base in Athens that makes daily life easy, it's worth knowing about.
Why Athens works for remote work
Athens has improved significantly as a remote work destination over the last few years. WiFi speeds are generally solid — both in accommodation and in the growing number of laptop-friendly cafés. The cost of living is low by European standards. A good meal costs €8–12. Coffee is €2–3. The metro is fast, clean, and covers most of the city efficiently.
Greece introduced a digital nomad visa in 2021, making it easier for non-EU remote workers to stay longer term. If you're considering a stay of more than 90 days, it's worth looking into.
Why Koukaki specifically
Koukaki sits directly below the Acropolis — close enough to walk up in 10 minutes, far enough from the tourist crowds to feel like a real neighbourhood. It's largely pedestrianised, walkable, and has everything you need within a short radius: supermarkets, pharmacies, bakeries, and a solid selection of cafés and restaurants that cater to residents rather than visitors.
It's also one of the quieter central neighbourhoods at night, which matters if you're actually trying to sleep and work the next day.
Where to work from
Koukaki has a good number of laptop-friendly cafés within walking distance — most offer reliable WiFi and won't rush you out after one coffee. For days when you need a more structured setup, there are several coworking spaces in the wider Koukaki and Thissio area that offer day passes and monthly memberships.

Getting around
The nearest metro station is Syngrou-Fix (Line 2), about a 10-minute walk. From there, the city centre is 2 stops, the airport is 45 minutes on the metro direct. For longer stays, the OASA transit app makes navigating the network straightforward.
The honest picture
Athens isn't Lisbon or Tbilisi in terms of nomad infrastructure — there's no huge co-living scene, and the city can feel chaotic if you're not used to it. But for people who want to actually live in a city rather than exist in a nomad bubble, it has a lot to offer. The food is excellent. The history is everywhere. And Koukaki, in particular, has a neighbourhood feel that makes it easy to settle in quickly.
